Table I · Effective withholding rate this month: 15.05%. Social security is calculated separately.
The monthly average spreads annual income over 12 months; it may differ from your monthly payslip. Allowance instalments and rounding can slightly change annual totals.
IRS withholding is an advance payment. Your annual tax return reconciles other income, deductions and household circumstances. This estimate does not predict a refund or additional tax due.
How we calculate take-home pay
We select table I, II or III of Despacho 233-A/2026 according to family status and dependants. We calculate withholding on monthly gross pay, subtracting the table deduction and the additional deduction per dependant. Three or more dependants reduce the maximum marginal rate by one percentage point under paragraph 5(h).
IRS withholding is rounded down to whole euros under CIRS article 99-E. The normal employee contribution is 11% of gross pay, including allowances. Holiday and Christmas allowances are taxed separately rather than added to normal pay to choose the withholding band. For monthly instalments, each allowance and its proportional withholding are calculated separately.
What this version covers
Tax residents of mainland Portugal in ordinary employment, without tax-relevant disability, with constant pay for a full year. Each of the two allowances equals monthly base salary.
Excludes Madeira, the Azores, self-employment, pension income, IRS Jovem, former-resident regimes, NHR/IFICI, disability concessions for you or family members, meal allowances, bonuses, overtime, other benefits and voluntary deductions. If these apply, your payslip may differ substantially.

Frequently asked questions
Why is annual salary divided by 14?
The annual total in this model includes 12 base salaries plus holiday and Christmas allowances, each equal to a base salary. Monthly allowance instalments distribute the allowances across 12 months; they do not change base salary to annual pay divided by 12.
Is annual net pay after the final income tax assessment?
No. It is income after payroll deductions, before any reconciliation through the annual IRS return.
