What changes for your budget?
Compare life after tax and everyday costs, whether you are moving to Portugal or returning to the UK. Start with your own figures, then explore purchasing power.
Enter your expected conversion rate after fees. Rates are not live. Moving costs are always in the destination currency: re-enter them if you switch direction.
UK budget · GBP
Use the same household size and lifestyle for both budgets. Include all household net income if comparing a household.
Estimate salary after tax. Add all net payments over the year, including holiday/Christmas payments and bonuses where applicable. We divide the annual total by 12; this is an average, not a payslip.
Use real quotes for your destination city. Enter 0 for costs that do not apply. Include annual bills divided by 12; avoid counting payroll deductions twice.

Your monthly room to save
Enter both annual incomes, all monthly costs (including zeros), and a positive exchange rate to see the comparison.
Compare purchasing power with PPP
Purchasing power parity estimates how much currency buys a comparable basket across countries. It is a country-average comparison, not a prediction of your rent, city costs or exchange rate.
Enter household/private consumption PPP factors from the same OECD dataset, year and reference unit (for example, local currency per US dollar). Do not mix GDP PPP, price-level indices or exchange rates with consumption PPP.
Enter your source annual net income and two positive, comparable PPP factors.
Formula: source annual net income × destination PPP ÷ source PPP. This is separate from the budget above: we do not adjust your costs by PPP or count housing twice. Factors are supplied by you and are not automatically verified or updated.
Plan the move beyond the salary
- Permission to live and work. Check the rules for your citizenship and circumstances before accepting a move. Start with living in Portugal or coming to the UK from Portugal.
- Tax residence and foreign income. A salary calculator is not a cross-border tax assessment. Moving partway through a year, working remotely or retaining income abroad may need separate advice. Review UK residence guidance, Portugal’s tax authority and the UK–Portugal tax treaty information. No special expat tax regime is assumed here.
- Healthcare and cover. Check eligibility and include any costs in your budget. See healthcare in Portugal and NHS entitlement guidance.
- Cash needed upfront. Budget for removals, travel, temporary accommodation, fees and overlapping rent. Refundable deposits still need cash available, even though they are not necessarily a permanent cost.
Why exchange rates and PPP answer different questions
An exchange rate converts money you can transfer or save. PPP compares purchasing power using a common basket of spending. Your own budget is more specific: housing location, household size and transport needs can outweigh a national average. The optional PPP calculation therefore remains separate from your actual cost comparison.
For example, if one country’s factor were 0.8 and the other’s 0.6 in the same reference unit, 32,000 of the first currency would correspond to 24,000 of the second at those factors. These are hypothetical factors, not UK or Portugal data.
Read the OECD explanation of PPP. No live cost-of-living feed or city-average price claims are used in this planner.
How the budget calculation works
Monthly surplus = annual net income ÷ 12 − monthly costs. We convert the source surplus at your exchange rate before comparing it with the destination surplus. Required destination annual net income = 12 × (destination monthly costs + converted source surplus), with a minimum of zero. Moving-cost recovery = one-off costs ÷ positive monthly improvement.
